BIRD FEEDING ~ 6 EASY STEPS

Bird feeding is an activity that can give you year-round enjoyment. Attracting and feeding wild birds is simply a matter of providing the basics they require: protective cover, water, and the right food. Providing all three will increase your backyard activity.

1. Choose a Feeder When choosing a feeder, keep in mind the type of birds preferred and specific benefits, such as ease of filling and cleaning, seed capacity, and seed protection form the elements. Also choose feeders with clear plastic or glass parts. Birds are more likely to frequent the feeder if they can see the food.

 2. Location Position your feeder near cover and out of the wind. To keep out squirrels, place the feeder at least 8 feet away from tall objects like trees, deck rails, and fences. Make sure feeders are positioned where you can easily see them and refill them.

3. Water Water can be provided in a shallow bird bath for both drinking and bathing. Place the bath near cover, and at least five feet from feeders to keep seeds out of the water.

 4. Food Attracting desirable birds depends as much on what food you offer them as it does on where and how you feed them. Look for lighter-colored seed mixes with the preferred base ingredient, white millet, that all feeder birds enjoy. Feathered Friend mixes are all white-millet based, so more is eaten and less gets wasted.

5. Wait First-time feeders may have to wait 2-3 weeks for birds to find their new feeding site. You’ll get best results if you feed all year long. You’ll attract more species of birds on a regular basis.

 6. Maintenance Along with consistent feeding, cleanliness is important at the feeding station. Moldy, spoiled food can be dangerous to birds, and if it is left scattered on the ground, it can attract undesirable rodents. Routinely clean off feeders that have become soiled in the intensity of feeding. For all you bird feeding needs, choose premium Feathered Friend Bird Foods and feeders, available only at Agway.
