CROP VARIETY IN YOUR HOME GARDEN
GROWING A VARIETY OF CROPS IN YOUR HOME GARDEN

No tomatoes taste better than those you grow yourself! Gardening is rewarding, relaxing and challenging. Small vegetable gardens can be as much fun as large ones.

GROW WHAT YOU EAT
It makes good sense to grow the vegetables that your family enjoys eating. Make a list of your favorite vegetables and even include herbs.

PLAN ON PAPER
There are no backaches or muddy shoes when you sketch your garden plan on graph paper. Using the list of vegetables you want to grow, start arranging rows and blocks in your garden. Check the spacing each vegetable requires and keep the sun lovers (onions, tomatoes, peppers & eggplants) in the brightest areas. Tuck lettuce, spinach, radishes, even parsley and mint in less sun. Gardening takes time and energy so keep the size of the vegetable garden in proportion to your available time. Sometimes small plots produce more because they are managed better than large gardens that are overridden with weeds and become hard work.

GARDEN FOR THREE SEASONS
Schedule spring, summer and fall crops so you double crop to make the best use of the garden space. For example, replant an early sprint row of peas or spinach with green beans or late carrots. Successive plantings provide a bountiful harvest!

Spring -Onions Peas Spinach Beets Lettuce Carrots Broccoli Cabbage Cauliflower Radishes Turnips Brussel Sprouts Parsley Swiss chard Chives

Summer- (After there’s no chance of frost) Tomatoes Peppers Melons Cucumbers Eggplant Beans Sweet Potatoes Sweet Corn Pumpkins Basil Dill Lavender Rosemary Sage

Fall- (Will tolerate light frost) Beets Lettuce Brussel Sprouts Cabbage Broccoli Chinese Cabbage Kale Carrots Parsley Radishes Swiss Chard Spinach

 PERENNIALS RESERVE A PROTECTED CORNER
Plant asparagus, rhubarb, chives, horseradish and other perennial favorites that grow year after year in a part of the garden that will not be rototilled every year. Protect them with mulch each fall and enjoy good eating.

SELECT A SUPER SITE
Gardens can be any size or shape, but growing prize-winning vegetables is easier if you select a level garden site with well-drained soil, lots of sun (at least 8 hours) and a source of water nearby. If existing soil is heavy and poorly drained, add Agway Peat Moss and Composted Manure to improve the soil texture.

Season after season, incorporate grass clippings, compost and other sources of organic matter. Till the garden soil 8 – 12 inches deep and do not work the soil when it is very wet because it will compact into hard clods. Test garden soil to determine that need for lime and fertilizer. Most vegetables grow happily with a ph 6 to 6.8. Spread necessary lime and fertilizer (a basic recommendation is 2 lbs. Agway All-Gro Plant Food 10-10-10 per 100 square feet or 5 lbs of Garden Plant Food 5-10-5 per 100 square feet) and work into soil before planting. Level soil with a garden rake.

Follow your garden plan, mark the rows, set the stakes and get on your knees to plant.

PLANT QUALITY
Buy quality whether you’re shopping for seed or garden transplants. Agway has a wide selection of vegetable seed tested for excellent germination. Grow spinach, carrots, beans, peas, beets, radishes, kale and sweet corn by seeding directly into the garden. Setout transplants (started plants) of long-season vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, peppers, egg plants). Purchase sturdy, dark green plants with no signs of pale yellow leaves or hungry insects.

WATER, WEED AND HARVEST
After planting, water vegetables plants regularly to keep them growing. Weed garden so desirable plants do not compete with weeds for water, nutrients and sunlight. Spread a 2-inch layer of grass clippings or other mulch to reduce weedy competition and to conserve moisture. Fertilize crops according to specific needs. Enjoy the delicious flavor of truly fresh vegetables. Keep picking vegetables so plants continue to produce through the season. Always harvest the fruit of your labor at their best!
