Spring Lawn Care 6
Easy Steps
Spring is a
prime season for lawn care. Start early and beat the
weeds.
Wake Up
Your Lawn
Rake leaves
and winter debris from the lawn. Look for thin or bare
areas that need to be seeded. Cool temperatures and
abundant rain make spring a good time to patch areas.
Seed
Early
Seed small
or large areas early so new grass gets established
before weeds compete. Pick up a copy or our Lawn Seeding
TIPS sheet for complete information.
Test Soil
Test soil to
determine the need to add lime and special fertilizer
nutrients. To take lawn sample, dig 2-3 inches deep with
a trowel or shovel. Take 6 samples from different parts
of your lawn. Mix samples together (need about 2 cups of
soil in total), in a clean, plastic container. For
problem areas where grass won’t grow, take a separate
sample. If the test results indicate that the soil pH is
below 6.4, add lime as recommended. Agway Pelletized
Lime is easy to apply in a lawn spreader. If soil pH is
above 6.4, no lime is needed. A complete soil test will
also indicate deficiencies in phosphorus and potassium.
Agway lawn experts will interpret test results and will
recommend the appropriate lawn fertilizer for a healthy
lawn.
Feed and
Weed
Lawn grasses
require certain nutrients for growth. If the soil does
not contain enough of these nutrients, or the plant
needs them faster than the soil can supply them, it is
time to add fertilizer.
In
Early Spring
Greenlawn
Crabgrass Preventer and Fertilizer is the perfect
product for early spring. It combines the nutrients that
grasses need early in the season with a weed preventer
that controls crabgrass, foxtail and other annual weeds
that start from seed early in the spring. It is easy to
apply with a fertilizer spreader before forsythia
blossoms drop. In thick, dense lawns where crabgrass is
not a threat use Agway Greenlawn Fertilizer. If lawn has
been seeded recently, use Greenlawn Crabgrass Preventer
and Turf Starter. This feeds the lawn and controls
crabgrass seedlings without hurting desirable grass
seedlings.
In Late
Spring
Turf grasses
and dandelions thrive along with many broadleaf weeds.
Apply Agway Greenlawn Weed Control and Lawn Fertilizer,
which feeds the lawn and controls the broadleaf weeds.
Agway Lawn Weed Killer is an effective liquid broadleaf
weed control. It should be applied when weeds are
actively growing, but not on windy or extremely hot
days, or when rain is expected within 24 hours.
Year-Round Program
To save
money on the above two fertilizing stops plus two more
that will keep your lawn green and healthy all season
long, consider a year-round program like the Agway
4-Pack ~ our complete lawn care system. With just four
simple applications you’ll get a lawn that looks great –
with no weeds and grubs – for the entire season.

Mow Often
Mow
routinely to keep lawn healthy and clippings short.
Sharpen mower blades and mow lawn at a height of 2-2 ½
inches. As temperatures increase, set the mower higher,
usually 2 ½ to 3 inches.
Water
Well
Lawns
require at least 1 inch of water each week. Spring
showers usually provide enough rain, but on new seeding,
water frequently to keep moist at all times.
